S-BOSS Begins Inquiry into Parking Availability

Thursday, May 13, 2010 | General Information

Still standing strong after 3.5 years, the modular village is set to be dismantled following the move of all departments contained in the temporary buildings into the reconstructed Old Science center. Curious about the fate of the parking that will be restored following the temporary building’s removal, S-BOSS has issued a formal request for information from the St. Olaf administration about the spots and who they will serve.

Furthermore, S-BOSS has recognized a concern with the potential unavailability of parking for potential students and their families. Admissions is set to occupy the west wing of the building– one that has, to S-BOSS’s knowledge, no nearby parking, save perhaps the spots beside Mellby Hall. The request of information from St. Olaf administration includes commentary on this concern, including the desire that some, if not all, spots surrounding Mellby have student input if they are to be re-zoned.

This report by S-BOSS is a continuance of the efforts of the SGA Senate’s transportation committee and reflects the hope that student voices will continue to be heard in the formation of parking policy at St. Olaf College.

Old Science to be Renamed

Thursday, May 13, 2010 | General Information

NORTHFIELD – Last Friday, the name of the new building being formed from Old Science was revealed: Tomson Hall. Named in honor of O. Jay Tomson ‘58 — the current chair of the St. Olaf Board of Regents — and his wife Patricia McCarthy Tomson ‘59, the building is set to house the six language departments and the Education department, in addition to administrative and service offices that were formerly housed in the administration complex, such as the Registrar, Financial Aid, and Admissions.

The naming of the building comes in honor of their $5 million gift to the college to help with the building’s reconstruction.

Mr. Tomson has served on the Board of Regents since 1995. He serves as Chairman of the Board of First Citizens National Bank in Mason City, Iowa, with branches in 10 North Iowa communities. Mrs. Tomson is the executive director of the First Citizens National Bank Charitable Foundation, an organization that focuses its efforts on funding charitable causes throughout northern Iowa.
